...in Windows 2000 and Windows XP

Device Manager is the tool that shows the devices that are currently connected to your system.

To start Device Manager:

1. Open the system control panel, and double-click "System":
   
   (Keyboard shortcut: press and hold the Windows key , then press 'BREAK')
2. After a short pause, you'll see the the general system properties page. Select the "Hardware" tab:
   
3. You'll then see the hardware properties page. Select "Device Manager":
   
4. You'll now see a window similar to the following.
