What's Ithaca Like?
Built on three hills (East, West, and South -- Cayuga Lake is to the North) and the valley between them, Ithaca is a smallish college-town surrounded by farming communities and glacier-gouged gorges in South Central New York State, giving rise to the popular local bumper sticker "Ithaca is Gorges." The Finger Lakes region has eleven long, narrow, "finger" lakes as well as many other lakes, streams, and channels. Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes, forms the region's northern border. Central New York is home to an abundance of bike paths, wildlife preserves, hiking trails, ski resorts, wineries, and dairy farms.
Ithaca Fest in the spring, Grassroots in the summer, and Light in Winter are just a few of the events that make Ithaca a great place to relax. Community supported agriculture -- which is a system that allows the consumer to pay for a crop “share” in advance, thus guaranteeing farmers a local market for fresh produce -- thrives in Tompkins County, with shares available for berries and winter storage vegetables as well as for summer growing season crops. Ithaca prints its own local currency, too, called Ithaca Hours.
The City of Ithaca counts 30,000 residents plus 20,000 students. It is the smallest SMSA in New York State, about 4 hours by car from NYC. Fifty-seven per cent of Ithaca's residents have Bachelor's degrees or higher. Cities Ranked and Rated by Bert Sperling and Peter Sander states that Ithaca is the #1 emerging U.S. city.
The Utne Reader has designated Ithaca "America's Most Enlightened City." The Dalai Lama, whose advocacy for tolerance and non-violence transcends religious affiliation, provides guidance to and is an occasional resident of the Namgyal Monastery, located in Ithaca.

What's Austin Like?
Austin is situated on the edge of the hilly, green part of Texas, an "oasis within an oasis," as they say. It is home to several major technology corporations such as Apple, Dell, IBM, Applied Materials, AMD, Samsung, and Freescale, as well as MCCI. As such, it is the center of a high-technology region known as Silicon Hills.
Austin is the capital of Texas, and has also been called the "Live Music Capital of the World," "the Capital of the World," or even simply, "the Capital." Austin's 6th Street has its own Mardi Gras, and for almost 50 years Austin has celebrated Eeyore's Birthday, which is a free-form, free-spirit event that raises money for non-profits.
As of the last census, the population stands at 656,562 people, making Austin the fourth-largest city in Texas and the 16th largest in the United States. Its SMSA, the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Area, is credited with a million people. (Though rumor has it that half of them are Yankees.)
The city of Austin ranks fifth in the country for number of college graduates, with 45 percent of the population holding a degree. Fortune magazine has recognized Austin as one of the country's top five intellectual capitals, and Austin ranks number 3 on Forbes' "Best Place for Business and Careers."
The acclaimed South by Southwest (SXSW) Film, Interactive, and Music Festival takes place in the spring as does the Urban Music Festival. Austin has all the amenities of a big city, without the negatives. Safe, pleasant, and clean, Austin was ranked No. 7 among big cities in the ePodunk College Town Index, and the Ladies' Home Journal ranked it No. 4 on the "Best Cities for Women" list.

What's Taipei Like?
Taipei, the capital of the Republic of China (ROC), sits close to the northern tip of of the island of Taiwan, situated off the southern Chinese mainland, almost equidistant from the Chinese mainland cities of Guangzhou (Canton) and Shanghai. The Portuguese called Taiwan "Formosa," meaning "lovely," "beautiful," or "shapely," as in Allen Ginsberg's famous dictum, "Art is shapely." Taiwan is bound to the east by the Pacific Ocean, to the south by the South China Sea and the Luzon Strait, to the west by the Taiwan Strait and to the north by the East China Sea.
Taipei is located in the Taipei Basin in northern Taiwan. Taipei commonly refers to the metropolitan area comprising Taipei City, Taipei County, and Keelung City, while Taipei City refers to the city proper. Taipei City is bordered by the Xindian River on the south, and the Danshui (Tamsui) River on the west. The northern border of the city is the Datun Volcano Group, whose tallest mountain is 1,120 meters high (3,674 feet). Taipei is also known as the "City of Azaleas." With a population of 2,630,872, Taipei is four times larger than Austin and some 50 times larger than Ithaca.
Many yearly festivals are held in Taipei, including the Taipei Lantern Festival and the Double Tenth. Taipei 101, the world's tallest building, is a popular location for festival celebrations. The beautiful park and elegant buildings of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial are a popular tourist destination. In 2000, Asiaweek ranked Taipei 5th in its list of of Asia's ten best cities.
